When I was scrolling on Pinterest for some upcycling inspiration, I saw some pictures of a skirt made out of ties. I thought that was amazing so I wanted to create something like that too. First to find out if and how other people made something like that too, I was looking on Youtube. There, I found a video from Hannah Valentine where she explained how she made one: https://youtu.be/AyQU8E7rDsk
I did it a bit different though.
First I bought a lot of ties in the thrift shop. I wanted them to all be in a bit of the same colour rage, so they would match nicely with each other. I thought I had a lot but that actually wasn’t the case. Eventually I only missed like 2. So make sure you have enough.
I started out with laying the ties next to each other and seeing what colours and pattern would be nice next to each other. I thought it would be nice to have small and large pieces next to each other, also because I didn’t have enough to make it with only the big pieces.
Then I found out that I wanted to make a skirt under it first. Just to make it more secure and that I would not be afraid of it falling apart in the future, my sewing skills aren’t the greatest.
So for the skirt I literally traced the other skirt I had and put a zipper in the side. I never made a skirt before and also never installed a zipper. To my surprise I found out it was really simple! I will be making more simple skirts in the future with some nice patterns. This was the video I used for installing the zipper: https://youtu.be/huQh2aE2Sao
So now I had the whole skirt laying flat and this was sort of my canvas in my eyes.
I sewed every piece of tie next to each other on the skirt. For some ties I used blue thread and for other I used a beige colour.
I sewed the side closed when all the ties were attached. Then it was time for the waistband. I lightly measure how big the waistband would be. Some cm extra could be later cut off.
I first took the ties apart and got out what was inside. You want to make sure the waistband would be not to thick because we’re also sewing it on to a heavy fabric.
Then I sewed the ties together on one side.
Don’t forget to sometimes iron in between!
I used clips to secure the waistband to my skirt and make it fit in the right places. Then i first sewed the bottom of the waistband.
Then sew the top of the waistband!
And finally, you can put a button on the side of the waistband. (I still need to do that)
And then it’s done!! I’m so happy with this skirt, I think it’s so original and cool.
I also made an Instagram video about that: https://www.instagram.com/p/Csa8xpGP9YV/
